Power of Music: Together for Japan

Next Tuesday, June 6, there will be another great sounding charity event at Cafe’ de Blue for those affected by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in March–including artists from Miyagi prefecture.

Tickets can be reserved by sending an e-mail to info@quincymcqueen.com, however note that you will still pay at the door.

In your message, include full name, number of tickets, and your contact information, and they will send you a confirmation e-mail.

On the day of the event, anyone in your group should be able to get in at the cheaper price by saying the name of the person who made the reservation.

All proceeds for this event will be donated to the Tohoku Earthquake Relief Fund via the Japanese Red Cross, used to cover the performance fees for the affected artists, and provide support for the affected fishery cooperative here in Kochi.

The main performer of the evening is a man from Miyagi Prefecture named Takuma Watanabe who goes by Combopiano.

Another group from Miyagi prefecture, Tadzio, will also be playing. While they look like sweet, quiet girls, they are ready to rock. Be ready for some hardcore metal from these nice young ladies.

In addition, there will also be a husband and wife flamenco guitar duet backed by Latin percussion. All three are originally from Kochi and have moved back. They run a music studio and are quite active in the Western Japan music scene.

Finally, there will also be a pianist performing from Takamatsu.

It will be a night of diverse, great music for a good cause. Please do your best to show up next Tuesday night and give your support. I’m not sure of ticket numbers, so please e-mail the ticket information to check availability.

Slow Down to the Good-Life Paced Atmosphere of Yururi

Just near Yasube, the awesome gyoza place downtown, is another izakaya with a very different feel to it.

Yururi (ゆるり) means to slow down and take it easy. Stepping into the cozy, intimate space imbues the relaxed feeling of the Kochi surfer culture. The atmosphere, accompanied by the aroma of the delicious food being made right in front of you, might cause a temporal lack of desire to go back out to the real world.

If you like fish and vegetables, this is the izakaya for you. All of the ingredients are from Kochi, and the chef has some interesting variations on things.

For example, the last time I was there, we had fish and chips, but the fish was battered with a slice of avocado. Mind blowing stuff–give me more!

Vegetables are usually steamed, and the sashimi is as fresh as it comes, making this place great for the health conscious as well.

The menu is very difficult to read, handwritten kanji, but don’t let the deter you. One of the servers speaks pretty good English and can describe anything on the menu if you ask him.

Don’t go crazy on ordering because the price will rack up pretty quickly, but it is still in moderate range. If you’re going with a group of five or six who like to drink a lot as well, you can expect of 3000-4000 per.

Also, it’s not so big, so if you’re heading in with a group, call for reservations ahead of time.

Yururi. Relax. Eat. Drink. Talk. Refresh. It is a must in Kochi.

L’aperitif s’il vous plait! June 2nd

Are you, like me, one of those people who can’t help thinking that most meals peak at the starter and then vaguely disappoint after that?

If so, Thursday June 2nd is your lucky day…

Bring on the Aperitif festival!  A bunch of Kochi’s best French and Italian chefs will displaying their wares at various stalls dotted around Central Park in the city.  Go along, buy yourself a glass of wine and then sample as many starters as you can manage.  The basic price is going to be 300 yen per dish, with some of the more sumptuous ones costing more like 500 yen.   It should be a great atmosphere, and we are hoping to discover some brilliant European restaurants hiding in Kochi that the Kochibeat has yet to unearth!

DATE: Thursday June 2nd

PLACE: Chou Koen

TIME: 5pm – 9pm

COST: As much or little as you want.

Event from DJ Consortium, S.P.A.Z.M: Faith

S.P.A.Z.M. are a group of DJ’s here in Kochi who have done a number of collaboration parties with DJ’s from outside the prefecture.

They are having an interesting looking event on Sat., May 28 that you should be sure to check out.

For a taste of what the music will be like, check out Human Elements blog.

In addition, it seems like some other interesting things will be going on at the event.  For example, live painting by a local artist (hygge), and animation dance.

It will be another all night (10 PM – 5 AM) chance to shake it with the fine people of Kochi.

You can even buy tickets in advance from the event homepage!

So go out, make some friends, dance some good music (DNB, house, dubstep) and practice your Japanese lip reading at Faith on May 28!

The summer is here, time to camp it up!

Chilly mornings are a distant memory, the mould is back and air conditioners are being prepped. Ladies and gentlemen, it is time to get out into the countryside and dip your stressed-out humid bodies into the river or sea, and stay in a tent under the stars.

Today we will introduce one of the best, cheapest and most relaxing campsites on the Shimanto river…

Mishima Camp ground.

Directions

  • Take the 56 or expressway west out of Kochi and keep going till you get to Kubokawa
  • Then turn right onto route 381 in Kubokawa.
  • You will now follow the Shimanto river into the hills for about 30km.
  • Go past Taisho-cho and just before you get to Showa-cho you will see said river-island and a little sign to the campsite.
  • Take a very sharp left turn just before a tunnel, and then go over a ‘chinka’ bashi (one of those submergable bridges)
  • Then follow the signs

Here’s a map

The reason this campsite is so highly recommended by us is that…

  1. You are free to camp wherever you like – there are no strict zones. Just rock up and choose your spot.
  2. You have to pay the princely sum of 300 yen per person to camp there.
  3. You have your own private little patch of river to play in.

This place really is wonderful.  Hopefully see you there on one of these sunny weekends!

harvey review: superstar dj. intimate club. 200 sweaty people. non-stop dancing

Harvey came, he played and we…

danced, drank, cheered, and then danced some more.

This was a fantastic club night, Otamajaxy was packed from about 10 pm on Thursday may 5th.  It was a normal working day at the end of golden week, but that wasn’t going to stop anyone having a good time.

The ‘friends’ Djs kicked off the evening, Shunpey first, next up Yo-hey and then YutakaMiyazaki.  They set the the scene and got everyone ready for mr Harvey.  He did not disappoint.  From 1am – 6am, he mixed afrobeat, disco, house, funk, pop, and then some more disco.

The crowd lapped it up. We all enjoyed the music, the moving, the flow of tequila and each other’s company.

These ‘friends’ club nights have a fantstic atmosphere.  I mean, you really do feel like everyone’s bestist buddy a few hours into the night!  The next one will be at the end of June.  Watch this space!

And so at 6am, off went DJ Harvey to Tokyo.  He was playing the freaks festival to about 10,000 people the next day!

And the rest of us smiled our way home at daybreak

Thanks friends and thanks again DJ harvey.
