Summer Jazz Festa! July 31st

The streets, live houses and bars of Kochi will once again be filled with the sounds of two stepping drum rhythms, twanging bass, sweltering sax and a little honky-tonk, too.  Somehow the humidity of late July is the perfect setting for Kochi’s finest jazz musicians, and a few superstars from out of town.

So, for those of you who don’t know, here is the dealio.  Buy an access all areas pass from any Tsutaya (DVD rental and bookshop) in town for 2,500 yen.  This will get you one free drink and entry into all the venues for the night.  It is well worth the price!

Date: July 31st (Sunday)

Power of Music: Together for Japan

Next Tuesday, June 6, there will be another great sounding charity event at Cafe’ de Blue for those affected by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in March–including artists from Miyagi prefecture.

Tickets can be reserved by sending an e-mail to info@quincymcqueen.com, however note that you will still pay at the door.

In your message, include full name, number of tickets, and your contact information, and they will send you a confirmation e-mail.

On the day of the event, anyone in your group should be able to get in at the cheaper price by saying the name of the person who made the reservation.

All proceeds for this event will be donated to the Tohoku Earthquake Relief Fund via the Japanese Red Cross, used to cover the performance fees for the affected artists, and provide support for the affected fishery cooperative here in Kochi.

The main performer of the evening is a man from Miyagi Prefecture named Takuma Watanabe who goes by Combopiano.

Another group from Miyagi prefecture, Tadzio, will also be playing. While they look like sweet, quiet girls, they are ready to rock. Be ready for some hardcore metal from these nice young ladies.

In addition, there will also be a husband and wife flamenco guitar duet backed by Latin percussion. All three are originally from Kochi and have moved back. They run a music studio and are quite active in the Western Japan music scene.

Finally, there will also be a pianist performing from Takamatsu.

It will be a night of diverse, great music for a good cause. Please do your best to show up next Tuesday night and give your support. I’m not sure of ticket numbers, so please e-mail the ticket information to check availability.

harvey review: superstar dj. intimate club. 200 sweaty people. non-stop dancing

Harvey came, he played and we…

danced, drank, cheered, and then danced some more.

This was a fantastic club night, Otamajaxy was packed from about 10 pm on Thursday may 5th.  It was a normal working day at the end of golden week, but that wasn’t going to stop anyone having a good time.

The ‘friends’ Djs kicked off the evening, Shunpey first, next up Yo-hey and then YutakaMiyazaki.  They set the the scene and got everyone ready for mr Harvey.  He did not disappoint.  From 1am – 6am, he mixed afrobeat, disco, house, funk, pop, and then some more disco.

The crowd lapped it up. We all enjoyed the music, the moving, the flow of tequila and each other’s company.

These ‘friends’ club nights have a fantstic atmosphere.  I mean, you really do feel like everyone’s bestist buddy a few hours into the night!  The next one will be at the end of June.  Watch this space!

And so at 6am, off went DJ Harvey to Tokyo.  He was playing the freaks festival to about 10,000 people the next day!

And the rest of us smiled our way home at daybreak

Thanks friends and thanks again DJ harvey.

Candle Night: Kochi Bathed in Candlelight

This amazing two day event in Nangoku has two faces–day and night–offering something for everyone. Whether you want art, music, good food, dancing, or just like seeing things burn, you don’t want to miss Candle Night.

An event for everyone

First of all, what will the event be like?  Well just head over to the event homepage to take a look at the pictures.

Looks beautiful, right?  The candle creator is called Mow Candles, and he has been making a variety of candles since 2007.  Since then, he has been adding the magic of candlelight to events all around Kochi, Japan.

Candle Night is an event to showcase his candles, and the art decoration will be led by design, photography, and video powerhouse, hygge.

day

Candles don’t do such a great job during the day, so the event organizers decided to make the showcase on food.  There will be a variety of food vendors to choose from.  Check out the event page for more details on who will be providing food.

The day time activities will have no kind of cover charge, so just go and enjoy the good food and atmosphere.  Oh, and why not buy some awesome candles?

night

When the sun goes down, you’re gonna need a ticket to stay.  Tickets are only a 1000 yen (elementary students are free), but there is a limited number.  Furthermore, you’ve gotta get one before April 28 from one of the cafes involved, or from the event organizers.  I’ve attached a picture down below with a google translated screen shot to save explanation time.

Sticking around for the night time transformation is a must.  So get your tickets.  If you have problems, comment below and someone will help you out.

The event space has different areas that you will want to move around and check out.  There will be outdoor music by DJ’s Suneo, U2K, and Eka.  There will also be a couple of garden/outdoor spaces lit up with candles.

details

This event seriously looks awesome, and I’ve heard great things from people who have been in the past.  If you’ll be in Kochi, don’t miss it for anything!
